Musical Influences - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Emerson, Lake and Palmer came to attention not long after I started buying records due in part to one of my friends introducing me to them via his elder brothers record collection. I can't actually remember which one of their albums I got hold of first as I didn't get them in any particular order until the release of their triple album Welcome My Friends To The Show That Never Ends which is one of the finest live albums of all time.

I do however recall we all went out and purchased ELP's version of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition which was on sale for just £1.49 as I recall. That is also a fine performance and illustrated a certain crossover or connection between some areas of Prog Rock with the classical world.

Emerson. Lake & Palmer were formed in 1970 by Keith Emerson (keys), Greg Lake (vocals/guitar) ad Carl Palmer (Percussion/drums). They were a highly successful band selling some 48 million records world wide. They disbanded in 1979 though there was a revival of sorts with Emerson Lake & Powell and released one studio album with Cozy Powell replacing Palmer as drummer.

The group also went on to release the excellent Black Moon in 1992 and their final album In The Hot Seat a couple of years later in 1994.

ELP were renowned for putting on good shows the only problem being they ever made any money out of them as these were so expensive to put on. However Keith Emerson made it clear that he didn't care ad would "do it all over again" as he enjoyed himself so much!

Sadly both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake have passed away but Carl Palmer was performing as an ELP Legacy band as late as 2018.
